Here is a test piece I did of the carving for the grip and of the Norse wood darkening method on the oak.

    You take vinegar and dissolve iron in it.
    It is clear (more or less) until you apply it to the wood then it darkens the wood. Unlike a normal dye it doesn't fade and also doesn't invert the grain of the wood. Also it was available during the Viking age, and is historically accurate.
